Las Vegas Buffets Remodeling & Downtown History Train Mystery

Las Vegas Buffets Remodeling; 2 of the budget buffets are not available at present, which limits the choice for those who want to spend less than 15 dollars (and certainly not more than 20) per person for a Vegas buffet.

1 ( Las Vegas Buffets Remodeling n.1) – WOW!!!  Just re-opened after new ownership, what was generally one of the best affordable buffets in Vegas, this new A.Y.C.E. buffet is now a super affordable gourmet buffet ideal for anybody and everybody who likes good food!  I love it.  We love it.  By far one of the best buffets in Vegas and the very best among the most affordable ones.  Keep an eye out on our Updates page because we will post the new video on this buffet and a detailed review on the dedicated page where we’ll write the updated, objective, no-nonsense review.

2 (Las Vegas Buffets Remodeling n.2) other budget buffet in Vegas, the one at the Orleans, is now closed and we’re told it will open again in September, after some remodeling.  Well, frankly I do hope that the remodeling will be more than just cosmetic, because its dishes, its ingredients and the way they are prepared could really use an improvement.

3 – Bye bye to a piece of history which to me made downtown Vegas:  the stunning “Buffalo Bill” train, a real piece of history which was next to the Main Street Station hotel and casino.  The lot was apparently sold and the train was moved.  I wrote about this and other gems you can still find in the area on my Vegas historical gems page You can see my video on this little gem below:

King Crab Legs in Vegas Buffets: Where?

Which Vegas Buffets offer King Crab Legs?  Before giving you an easy list, I need to highlight king crab legsthat many Las Vegas buffets will offer king crab legs during special occasions, such as Friday seafood nights (but beware, because some of Vegas dirt-cheap buffets may even skip crab legs altogether and offer a variety of seafood instead). Even the more expensive, high-end buffets will not necessarily offer king crag legs on any midweek lunch; hence the lower price.

Having said this, the following Vegas buffets are where you are most likely to find king crab legs on a more regular basis:

Mirage Buffet Dinner.  I have seen King crab legs served for dinner at the buffet at Mirage.  Double check before you go, things can change fast. I have a brand new video of this buffet showing this.  If it’s no longer on the latest Vegas videos section, it’ll be in the section titled Real Vegas Videos.  If you manage to go when they serve them, it’ll be a great deal because this buffet is still relatively affordable despite its location and its quality (on a good day it can be on of the best 3 Vegas buffets, otherwise it’s definitely one of the best 10 buffets in Vegas.

The buffet at Aria.  It’s the king of seafood as far as ‘regular buffets’ go (so, not taking into consideration the ultra expensive, Sunday-only Sterling Brunch nor the additionally-priced separate seafood section of the Rio Buffet).  Aria is one of the very few buffets offering a wide range of seafood and fish options during a regular midweek lunch.  Their regular dinner has them and, of course, their special weekend seafood dinner also features them.  The rare exceptions are during theme nights when other dishes are prioritized, but it’ll be clearly advertised at the entrance of the buffet.

Bacchanal.  Love it or hate it and, even if lately it’s certainly decreased in quality while keeping the high prices, they do offer King crab legs for dinner.  Oh, but it’s so expensive…

Bellagio and Wynn.  Like most high-end buffets (even with their faults, and to know more I recommend you read our dedicated page, click on the linked words)

Studio B will has crab legs for lunch and, often (but double check) king crab legs for dinner.  During their special Friday seafood night you may even be lucky enough to find lobsters!

Rio Carnival and Seafood buffet has a special seafood section, for which you have to pay extra, where you find seafood delicacies such as octopus and – for dinner – king crab legs.

Sterling Brunch offers expensive food items extravaganza with a head-spinning price tag that will scare away many Vegas visitors.  Moreover, it’s only open on Sunday brunches!

Because things can change suddenly in Vegas buffets, I always recommend people phone the buffet directly to make sure their favorite food is served on that particular day.  I do it!

Vegas Resorts Without Kids

Vegas Resorts Without Kids.  Somebody recently wrote me this  message (I am posting it here, with my answer below, because I think it’s of shared interest):

Vegas Resorts Without Kids

Hello.  My mom and I stayed at Harrah’s last summer. It was a nice time however it was crawling with kids everywhere running screaming. I had never seen so many! One day in the pool, which was not any better, a child got sick so the whole pool was shut down. Kids had their street clothes on, others in diapers, same went for the new wading pool. We told the life guard but she said nothing could be done because the hotel and pool are family friendly. Management could care less either! Can you recommend a hotel near the same price point that is not kid friendly!!! I would like to enjoy the pool and my stay. (Vegas resorts without Kids).

Dear Terry, I sympathize with you.  Las Vegas should first and foremost be fun for adults; if being family friendly is a business decision in order to widen their target market (and I also understand that for some leaving their children at home is not possible), then resorts should provide separate amenities.  Some do.  For example, MGM Grand has a huge pool area and one of those pools is adults-only; another is lap-swimming only (so you won’t have kids diving on your head as you try to swim); so, perhaps, MGM Grand, if they keep to this arrangement (and you know, things can change overnight in Las Vegas) could be an option.  Golden Nugget has one adult pool (separate from their general pool). Also, Excalibur has an adult pool (although on my last trip I had to pay 10 dollars to get in, I am not sure if this ridiculous idea is still implemented or not – it’s always a good idea to phone the resort and ask). The higher-end resort will offer some ‘separation’ between children and adult amenities, at least many of them.  Another option, if you are into a party atmosphere for young adults, you could opt for a pay-pool (many mid-range resorts have it, such as Mirage), where you will only find young adults ‘partying’ albeit in a loud fashion and often in a super crowded atmosphere).   Otherwise, if you want a quieter time with your mother, going early to the huge Mirage pool (as soon as they open) will at least allow you to have some relatively quiet time (though they do play music, albeit not too loud in the early morning).  Tropicana, on my recent visits, seemed to have more of an adult atmosphere (but there seemed to be no real separation between adults and children – I have a video on Tropicana showing you its pool area). A budget option almost on the Strip could be Hooters: last time I was there I saw very few kids  (but it was a less-than-well-kept hotel room, though the pool was good and 24 hours (!) and so was the gym); I have a page which shows you the pool area at Hooters.  In the summer and whenever schools are closed, though, you will see a larger influx of children everywhere.

It is always a good idea, and this is for every Vegas visitor, to write the the resorts and ask for adult-only pools.  If people don’t complain, things wills remain as they are.  After each of my Vegas stay I always make a point of writing to management for praise or criticism.  They may not care, but if everybody does it they may get the point! 😉

Besides Vegas resorts without kids, this is where you could go for a Vegas solo adventure.

Las Vegas Resort Fees: How Much and… The ‘Con’

Las Vegas Resort Fees UPDATED constantly.  They are getting so expensive that it’s now a mere insult.  They are added to the base rate of the hotel and they are very expensive, especially on the Strip but also off-Strip.  To make matters worse, they do not include much, especially in winter when many pools are closed, or on holidays when gym hours are limited and when, at any time of the year, you have to pay for parking.  Every time you check in ask if the pools are heated and open and if they say ‘no’ we invite you to ask for a reduction in the resort fee.  You will most likely be told that the resort fee is just a term they choose and it’s just an additional fee the hotel applies, which has little or nothing to do with amenities or what they offer.  You even have to pay for parking most times!

These Las Vegas resort fees are a disgrace, but they have not deterred visitors from flocking, hence they have remained and increased, confirming that Las Vegas is now a place where the word ‘deals’ or ‘comps’ does not really mean much, with some exceptions which we talk about in this website. There are some Vegas resorts which do not charge any fee and we do include a list of those too (click on link). But on this page, we list which main Vegas resorts charge this dreaded fee and how much it is per resort after the latest increase (see below).  Beware that many other Vegas hotels charge this fee, even off-Strip, although it’s usually less than on the Strip, but not insignificant.  If in doubt, always phone the resort; to make matters worse, these fees are taxable too (13.35%), which means the total price will be higher than what’s listed above.

What do these Las Vegas resort fees include? Well, the list is shrinking in range and quality; so far, they generally include:

– use of the resort pools (what happens in winter when some of them are closed?)
– free local phone calls and free newspapers
– free use of the resort fitness center (however, the fitness center hours are not always generous, something that we need to keep complaining about, since we do pay for this service in the resort fee).
– Wireless Internet: in some Vegas hotel it’s resort-wide whilst in others it’s only limited to your room.  In some resorts the quality of the ‘feed’ is high whilst in others it’s poor (thus leaving us wondering what we’re paying for).  Some Vegas hotels have the nerve of providing only ‘basic Wi-Fi’ and charge more for a decent connection.  A disgrace, plain and simple.  Always complain, always, because they need to get the message!

Best Way to Book Vegas Flights and Hotels

Book Vegas Flights Hotels: which way is best (package or separately) and which website are best for either options.  I decided to update this topic because I have been asked several times recently, so I hope that, by writing the answer here, many of you will make use of it.

If you cannot spend too much time by a computer sifting through options online, a good, reliable hotel + flight package online site for Las Vegas is vegas.com. I just tried it now and I found a good deal with Cosmopolitan, which is an excellent resort in an excellent location (of course the deals vary according to the specific dates you choose). Vegas.com has a flight + hotel tab and, once you go through it, it allows you to choose the room type as well. book vegas flights hotels

If you do not receive hotel offers directly from Vegas resorts (which often are the best deals), the above could be a good option. One important aspect to consider, however, is this: if you bundle hotel and flights sometimes you may be stuck with not having free cancellations. On the other hand, any Vegas hotel reservation will offer free cancellation up to (generally) 72 hours prior to your arrival date, which is a great deal. (Of course double check the cancellation policy when you are about to book the Vegas hotel of your choice or after booking, since you will receive a confirmation by email with all the details. If you cancel within those parameters you will receive a full refund. More on best ways to book Vegas flights hotels:

alternatively, if you want to book hotel and flight separately (I always do this), then you have many more choices of course. If you cannot spend much time by a computer then a website like smartervegas.com can be a good option. Once there, click on the hotel you want and see what offers they run, or simply digit the dates and see what offers are available for that period. smartervegas.com often offers added value options such as free buffets or free shows or free upgrades. Having said this, smartervegas.com not always offers free cancellation so be very careful about booking with them unless you are certain you will not need to cancel (always check the fine print).

As per flights, I often use skyscanner.com. If you have a voucher or a discount code from a specific airline, of course you may want to book directly online from that airline’s website.  See below for more details:

Cheapest Buffets in Las Vegas under $10

Cheapest Buffets in Las Vegas:  For Under 10 dollars Cheapest Buffets in Las Vegas

The crown for the cheapest buffet for lunch is still going to Palace Station and Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, costing only $6.99 (with their players card; if you have to sign up, which is simple and free, give yourself a few extra minutes and bring your photo ID); whilst the cheapest Vegas buffet for dinner is at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder ($8.99 during midweek), Fiesta Henderson and Palace Station (still, be prepared to need your players card, as explained above).

The cheapest brunch buffet, costing $8.99, is at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder and Fiesta Henderson. The cheapest Vegas buffet for breakfast is (again) at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, which is just $5.49 with card. The following contenders are at Silver Seven, Palms (Palms’ is a little more but it’s by far the best, read our dedicated page on it), Gold Coast (which has been improving a bit so it’s a great contender on a ‘good day’), Orleans, Fremont, Main Street Station, Sam’s Town, Suncoast, Aliante, Silverton, South Point, Rampart, Cannery, Eastside Cannery, Railroad Pass, Fiesta Rancho, Santa Fe Station, Boulder Station and Texas Station, mostly for breakfast and lunch, along with Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch for breakfast only.

What can you find at the cheapest buffets in Las Vegas?  General breakfast favorites (including eggs, sausages, pancakes) or, for lunch and dinner, you’ll have the usual American comfort food, some Italian-imitation dishes, some Chinese dishes, some Mexican dishes, some sort of ‘salad’ station and a dessert station (with soft-serve ice cream or, if you are lucky, with gelato).  Some of the better buffets will have much more, including Sushi, made-to-order Asian grill, Sushi (not great, but still…) and a few stronghold dishes which may make you want to go back for more.  For example, Red Rock has some really delicious Calzone (or Stromboli – but they are only good depending on who’s making them, unfortunately – lately Palms’ buffet has the best calzoni).  This is for the bargain-basement, lowest prices of the week; on weekend dinner or brunch you may find more, such as seafood.

Excalibur Vegas Stay: Easy Survival Guide

Excalibur Vegas Stay: Essential Survival Guide for the Excalibur resort in Las Vegas

If you want to avoid hating this Vegas ‘budget’ Strip resort (or being ‘broken’ by it) you need to follow these steps:

1 – if you truly (but truly!) do not care about the room you may be assigned, or the bed you may be sleeping in, or the quality (or lack thereof) of the mattress, or the view from your room window, etc, then skip to point 5 of this Excalibur Vegas stay survival list.

2 – if you care about having some sort of a view from your room window, you need to specify this at check in. Bear in mind that you may be assigned a low-floor ‘courtyard’ room (facing the inside of the Excalibur) which means that all you’ll be seeing is concrete. Inbound-looking rooms are usually quieter at Excalibur, but (unless you are on a really high floor, say 22 and above) the lack of view can feel claustrophobic to some. I was told that all even number rooms face the inside.

3 – The Resort Tower has still quite a few old mattresses and they often feel as if you are sleeping on concrete at best (unless they are lumpy or have ‘valleys’ in them, which makes it even worse). The ‘remodeled’ Royal Tower rooms seem to be generally smaller, though floors 1-15 have very comfortable beds, which almost make you forget that you are staying at Excalibur altogether.  In fact, they have newly remodeled rooms with modern touch ups and very comfortable beds.  These are not on all floors so you need to ask.  In my opinion, they are well worth the upgrade.  So, if you want to sleep comfortably (on a soft, higher-end mattress with higher-end linen rather than cheap motel-style sheets and covers), you may have to pay the extra 10 to 15 dollars a night for the upsale you will be forced to endure at check-in. Remember that a comfortable room may induce you to stay in it more, which may mean less time in the smoke-filled casino, where you are more-likely-than-not to lose money. If you want to try and cheap out by staying in a Resort Tower older room with a concrete-inspired mattress, you may eventually feel desperate enough to want to change rooms, which is always a hassle (especially in less-than-luxurious resorts). Excalibur Vegas stay

4 – Following point 3, if you are told you can request a ‘mattress-topper’ (often referred to as a ‘foamy’) to soften the concrete-style mattress of many Resort Tower rooms, beware that: a) they don’t have king sizes, only queen sizes (something they omit to tell you but that you will find out after hours of trial and error) and b) they are often filthy, so filthy that the room cleaner did not want to touch it (in my own personal experience).

5 – If you switch rooms trying to improve your Excalibur Vegas stay, check for any items you may have potentially left behind: check, check and check again. If you leave them in the room, they are as good as lost (I was told it’s particularly bad during the evening). I left my charger in room n.1, realized this only 90 minutes after the swap and, when I phoned customer service, all I was told was: ‘we cannot ask the new guests (if they found your charger) because it’s too late at night’. Ok, there’s so much wrong with this sentence, which essentially suggests that no cleaner goes through the room enough to find items left behind OR that nobody cares about reporting such items OR that somehow items get ‘lost’ in the Excalibur maze, one way or the other. As I write this, I still remember leaving an item behind at Bellagio: not only did they notify me of it when I had not even realized it myself, but they sent me the item by mail at no charge (I was on my way home when they contacted me); Excalibur, like many ‘budget’ Vegas resorts (usually those belonging to large chains), is not like that, to put it as diplomatically as I can put it.

6 – Some rooms have plenty of sockets whilst others don’t; always bring your own extension chord with a multi-plug option.

7 – Bring some disinfecting wipes (and this is probably advisable in every hotel you go to): room turnaround in Las Vegas is very fast (well, it was at Excalibur) and I find it hard to believe that surfaces get truly cleaned: besides the obvious stains and dirt spots you will see, there’s a lot more you won’t see. Enough said.

8 – Check-in can be painfully slow; the VIP check in section can also be slow, being one sad line at the end of the registration area. Be prepared for the most crowded place you’ve ever seen, like a badly managed train station, with people practically camping on the floor whilst their traveling companion checks in.  You will enjoy the widest range of coolers on display by many checking-in guests, giving you an idea of what a true Excalibur Vegas stay is all about by frugal guests, and pre-warning you that the ice buckets in the rooms here are very small.

9 – On a positive note, they don’t seem to be too strict about the early check in charge (especially on low-traffic times/low season).

10 – Most Excalibur rooms don’t have a bath tub. So take a bath at home, since you won’t enjoy it during your Excalibur Vegas stay!

11 – Don’t expect to be watching great HD channels in your rooms. The selection is limited and the picture quality is not the best. On a positive note, the wi-fi quality is very good, with great speed.

12 – Unless you can sleep through any noise you can imagine, bring ear plugs.  For some reason many Excalibur guests seem to want to practice wild screaming and heavy door-slamming late at night (the later the better, it seems), something you will hear very clearly through the not-sound-proofed door.  On a positive note, the smoking problem which used to pervade Excalibur room corridors seems to have disappeared.

13 – Following on point 12, make sure your room is far from the house-keeping access door; this area is as crowded and loud as a fish market peopled by hard-of-hearing individuals; the crazy yelling to-and-from starts at 9am and it will pervade your dreams until you wake up out of desperation.

14 – Resort credit. Don’t start charging your room like crazy: be very meticulous when you ask Registration what is and what is not covered by the resort credit: most places are not. We have a full page on Resort Credit Bewares which apply to your Excalibur Vegas stay.

15 – Slot Tournaments. Unless you are one of the lucky 5 who win ‘big’ (out of around 150 people), you may be only winning 100 or 200 dollars in free-play, which sounds like a lot but it is generally not so. Free play, for mysterious reasons we can only speculate on, never seems to yield good payouts. In other words, slot machines seem to mysteriously become even ‘tighter’ when using one’s Free play. 200 dollars in free play may yield only about 20 real dollars in ‘winnings’, running the risk that you will want to play more thus squandering much more of your hand-earned money (which is what Free play is designed to achieve anyway). We have a page on Slot Tournaments Warnings and a page on Free play ‘Bewares’, for those who don’t know much about this.

Now, let’s recap the good points about Excalibur:  1) excellent wi-fi throughout the resort, including the gym (a rarity in Vegas) 2) the gym has hand sanitizers as well as a great supply of bottled water (purified), so you don’t have to share the water dispenser germs accumulated by every single frugal traveler filling up his own water bottle  3) the spa is only 10 dollars extra  4) you get a lot for your gambling here. So, your Excalibur Vegas stay can be a success, if you follow the above!
